BEFORE YOUR BOOK LEAVES THE WORKSPACE
A final check
for your ebook.
Generation gives you a draft. Your review turns that draft into a book you can stand behind. Use this checklist before sharing an export or submitting it to a retailer.
Make the promise match the manuscript
- Read the title, subtitle and introduction together. Do the chapters deliver what they promise?
- Check that the chapter order gives a beginner enough context before advanced material.
- Remove repeated advice and replace vague examples with details useful to your reader.
- Check names, dates, quotations, calculations and factual statements against reliable sources.
Review the writing as an editor
- Read the opening and conclusion aloud. Keep a consistent voice and terminology.
- Look for unsupported certainty, invented references or advice that needs expert review.
- Add your own experience where relevant and remove claims you cannot support.
- Ask a trusted reader whether any section is confusing or incomplete.
Look closely at every image
- Check faces, hands, lettering, diagrams and any detail a reader might take as an instruction.
- Remove imagery that implies an endorsement, shows an unsuitable brand or resembles protected material.
- Make sure captions describe what the image actually shows.
- Review the rights and permissions for any material you supplied.
Open the exported file
- For PDF, inspect the cover, table of contents, page breaks and several pages on a small screen.
- For DOCX, check heading styles and image placement in the word processor you will use.
- For EPUB, test navigation, images and text resizing in an ebook reader or your retailer’s preview tool.
- Confirm that the title, author details and copyright page are correct.
Check the platform’s current rules
Each retailer decides what files and disclosures it accepts. Check its current content, formatting and AI-content rules before uploading. Amazon KDP, for example, explains its AI-generated and AI-assisted content requirements in its official content guidelines. Do not assume that a successful export guarantees acceptance.
Keep a version you can return to
Save the exported files you reviewed, record any sources or permissions you relied on, and keep your editable manuscript. If you find a problem later, update the book and review a new export before sharing it.
